Hawthorn slate roof repairs, extensions, re-roofing and new installations

Need assistance for your slate roofing requirements?

What can we as Hawthorn slate roofing contractors help you to accomplish.

There are many and varied styles of home in Hawthorn. Many of the 20th century houses have tiled and iron roofs but there is still many original old Victorian and Edwardian homes with slate roofs. Early Hawthorn slate roofed homes were mainly built just before and after the end of the 19th century. These sought after homes are still very popular with many people who love the character and charm that these period homes have plenty of. It’s just something that comes with age and no matter how some builders try, its just not easy to replicate when building a new house.

Being that these homes are now over 100 years old, it stands to reason that there’s going to be some kind of maintenance or repair program, or even restoration needed.  Sometimes, when some of these homes roof slate is just no longer impervious to water, even a complete re-roof with new slate.

So, what can we offer to slate roof homeowners in Hawthorn ?

Our services include :

• Slate roof maintenance          –  Cleaning gutters, repairing the odd damaged or slipped slate… on a regular program
• Larger slate repairs                  –  A bit more time involved here..larger damaged areas, maybe by tree branches or falling chimney bricks etc..
• Re-fixing of loose capping’s  –  Either terracotta or metal ridges and hips. Expert in both areas
• Gutters                                            –  Renewal, or if possible repair of valley irons, chimney trays and box or parapet wall guttering
• Stripping and Re-nailing        –  Needed when the slates just seem to continually slide out of place every few weeks or months
• Slate re-roofing                           –  When the roof has serious leaking problems and the slate itself is soft and absorbing lots of water… new slates needed

Building a new home in Hawthorn and have slate roofing queries or questions ?

There are still many new houses being built in Hawthorn at present, and many are following the popular trend of slate roofed French Renaissance style homes. This style is also very popular  in the nearby suburbs of Balwyn, Surrey Hills and Camberwell . They are nearly always double story and one feature of these homes is the steeply pitched roof facade covered with roofing slate. Other features of these roofs are shortish rafter lengths which are sometimes curved to a shallower pitch at the lower edge of the roof. The hips and valleys – or internal and external corners – are sometimes given a close fitting finish to hide all roof flashings associated with the slating.

There are also a few other styles of new constructions requiring a slated roof, and they range from small single story homes up to three and four story apartment blocks.

Choosing a good quality slate, and right style of finish, is key here to getting not only a nice looking roof, but one that’ll be maintenance free and last your home for a life time.
